LOCAL INSPIRATION FOR HOME REMODELING

Renovation and remodeling projects vary throughout the different regions of San Diego, as each city and neighborhood has its own specific characteristics and quirks. Thus, remodeling projects that are sought after in one area of the county may not necessarily be popular in a different area. While fancy homes along the coast might see second story additions as a common renovation to capture the view, this will not necessarily be the case with houses located inland and with no view of the beach. In other words, typical Poway home remodeling projects will not necessarily be common in Carlsbad. The following guide should help you get ideas about what remodeling projects are typical in a couple of different San Diego cities.
LA JOLLA
La Jolla is a unique, upscale beach community in southern San Diego. It is home to numerous art museums (including one that houses works from Dr. Seuss, who considered La Jolla a second home, as well as artwork from numerous famous musicians, such as Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones), upscale restaurants and shopping opportunities, a snorkel-friendly cove, and other beaches that offer residents and tourists the rare opportunity of seeing seals in their natural habitat as up-close as legally permitted. Though far-removed from its roots as a small artist community, the city has managed to retain much of its original character with modest beach cottages, and of course the Spanish influences that seem to be mandatory to California architecture. Of course, La Jolla has gained many modern designs over the years, just like any other city.
Because they have to be well-built in order to survive the coastal climate, La Jolla homes are usually structurally sound. Therefore, most La Jolla remodeling projects are for aesthetic purposes, such as customizing the appearance of the house. Second story additions are also quite popular due to the location of many of La Jolla’s homes right on the beach.
MISSION HILLS
Mission Hills is a quaint town in San Diego, overlooking Old Town and the San Diego Bay, and within minutes of many schools and universities. This relatively small town (for San Diego standards) is oriented toward retirees, but welcomes residents of all backgrounds.
The most common Mission Hills home remodeling projects are kitchen and bath renovations, since homes in that city typically have outdated kitchens and bathrooms. Because of the location of Mission Hills, residents often add second stories as well to better take advantage of the splendid view.
